Advancement Live, 12/3: Online Ambassadors and the Emergence of Digital Volunteers

Volunteers have served colleges and universities well for decades. Higher Ed Advancement offices have mobilized and coordinated the activity of alumni, parents, and friends on behalf of their institutions with effective appeals for time, talent, and treasure. At a time when more and more people are spending an increasing amount of time online, there’s a fourth resource that we can ask of volunteers: their networks. It is increasingly clear that online ambassadors can deploy their networks to make direct contributions to a range of institutional initiatives.

In this show, Bentz Whaley Flessner’s Justin Ware, Columbia University’s Jake Strang, and Social Toaster CEO Brian Razzaque discussed the case for online ambassador programs with Host Andrew Gossen. Topics covered included the ways in which online ambassador programs can help support campaigns and ongoing initiatives, tools that can be used to recruit and manage online ambassador programs, issues to consider when launching an online ambassador program, and an account of how Columbia University deployed online ambassadors in support of Columbia Giving Day, a 24-hr. campaign conducted in October 2013 that raised $7.9 million from almost 10,000 gifts. However, driving giving is only one of the areas in which such programs can pay big dividends — an active, motivated corps of digital volunteers can be an invaluable resource in almost any situation.
